Find the Personal Connection
It's the easiest thing to do in the world, but so many job seekers forget to do it. When you meet a new business contact or are in an interview situation, be sure to make a personal connection that goes beyond business. If you're in an office or lobby, look around for photos or artwork or mementos or awards that you can comment on. Even the most innocent remark, such as "That's an interesting award, how did you get it?" will lead to easy, casual conversation that will give you a personal insight into the person with whom you are speaking. Great topics are always kids, sports, travel, volunteerism, and other shared experiences. Often a small personal connection, such as a shared hobby or interest, can accelerate friendships quickly in the business world.
